        FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Is testing required for helmets by law?
Since 1999, testing bicycle helmets in the US has been required by federal law and is regulated under 16 CFR 1203, Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets. Although these regulations do not apply to other types of sport helmets (skateboarding, football, skiing, etc.), there are a number of industry standards (ASTM, NOCSAE, EN) that provide safety requirements for sport helmets.
In the absence of federal regulations, the CPSC uses these industry standards to determine compliance. The CPSC pamphlet, Which Helmet for Which Activity, states, “Helmets specifically marketed for exclusive use in an activity other than bicycling. . . should meet other federal and/or voluntary safety standards.”
